Il 13 luglio 1878, l’organo di stampa della Royal Institute of British Architects respinse il restauro falsificatore, un evento che segnò l’inizio dell’Anti Restauration Moviment, un movimento che promuoveva la tutela e la protezione dei monumenti storici. Morris e Ruskin furono tra i maggiori sostenitori di questo movimento e svolsero un ruolo importante nella sua diffusione.
On July 13, 1878, the press organ of the Royal Institute of British Architects rejected the restoration forgery, an event that marked the beginning of the Anti Restauration Movement, a movement promoting the preservation and protection of historic monuments. Morris and Ruskin were among the major supporters of this movement and played an important role in its spread.
Oltre alla catalogazione e alla salvaguardia delle architetture, il movimento aveva anche il compito di informare e formare coloro che desideravano approfondire il mondo della tutela e della conservazione dei monumenti. In addition to the cataloguing and preservation of architecture, the movement also had the task of informing and educating those who wished to learn more about the world of monument protection and preservation. Morris contribuì in modo significativo alla diffusione del movimento di Anti Restauration, condividendo gli stessi ideali di Ruskin. Morris contributed significantly to the spread of the Anti Restauration movement, sharing the same ideals as Ruskin. As Francis La Regina states, architectural restoration is not only about the choice of styles to imitate or materials to use, but represents a broad attitude toward the reality around us, the natural and anthropological environment, and the historical and artistic legacy.
Morris sosteneva che questa eredità non ci appartiene, ma appartiene a coloro che l’hanno creata, alla generazione che l’ha goduta e alle generazioni future che potranno apprezzarne i caratteri qualitativi.
