L’opera Le sette lampade dell’architettura di Ruskin ha come obiettivo quello di sensibilizzare tutti sul significato dell’architettura e sui doveri dell’uomo nei confronti delle nuove costruzioni e della conservazione del patrimonio antico. Secondo l’autore, i capitoli dell’opera rappresentano l’illustrazione dei principi dell’architettura, e non un saggio sull’architettura europea. Ogni capitolo è dedicato ad una delle sette lampade dell’architettura: sacrificio, verità, potenza, bellezza, vita, memoria e obbedienza.

Ruskin’s work The Seven Lamps of Architecture aims to make everyone aware of the significance of architecture and of human duties towards new buildings and the preservation of ancient heritage. According to the author, the chapters of the work are an illustration of the principles of architecture, not an essay on European architecture. Each chapter is dedicated to one of the seven lamps of architecture: sacrifice, truth, power, beauty, life, memory and obedience.

In particolare, il sesto capitolo, intitolato ‘La lampada della memoria’, contiene le pagine in cui Ruskin ha espresso la sua dottrina sulla conservazione, sostenuta dalla cultura moderna. L’autore afferma la necessità di applicare gli stessi principi alla costruzione della nuova architettura e alla tutela dell’architettura antica, affinché esse diventino elementi integranti dell’ambiente di vita della società umana. Il capitolo è diviso in due parti: la prima riguarda la costruzione del nuovo, gli effetti del tempo sugli edifici e il concetto di ‘pittoresco’; la seconda affronta i problemi della tutela e del restauro dell’architettura antica. Ruskin parte dall’affermazione dell’importanza del rapporto tra natura e opera dell’uomo e tra le cose e il ricordo, individuando nell’architettura l’elemento fondamentale per non dimenticare.

In particular, the sixth chapter, titled ‘The Lamp of Memory,’ contains the pages in which Ruskin expressed his doctrine on preservation, supported by modern culture. The author asserts the need to apply the same principles to the construction of new architecture and the preservation of ancient architecture, so that they become integral elements of the living environment of human society. The chapter is divided into two parts: the first deals with the construction of the new, the effects of time on buildings, and the concept of the ‘picturesque’; the second deals with the problems of the protection and restoration of ancient architecture. Ruskin starts from the affirmation of the importance of the relationship between nature and man’s work and between things and remembrance, identifying architecture as the key element in not forgetting.
